Since the 17th C. Dalmatians have been used as English carriage dogs due to their affinity for horses, agility on the road and guarding instincts. But Dalmatians also crossed the pond. President George Washington first imported a female in 1786 and then a mate for her the next year. Dalmatians are also known as firehouse dogs because of their history of running next to the fire trucks towards danger. They are fierce, loyal and unafraid of danger. We love them because they are graceful, beautiful and part of American tradition!
